Alicia

Alicia

It is my mission to 1.) engage students in meaningful learning experiences targeted to their interests and abilities, 2.) inspire them to achieve their goals, and 3.) provide whatever assistance and resources they need to help them in their journey. I have over twenty years of experience as an elementary school teacher. During that time, I have taught grades four to eight, most recently in the French Immersion program in Simcoe County. I have also worked at the Board office as a French as a Second Language Consultant. I am currently working on my Master’s of Education with a focus on teaching Mathematics. I am passionate about helping students pursue their interests, and have helped to establish a student-centered learning environment at my school. I have thoroughly been enjoying my time as a tutor at the Academy for Mathematics and English, where I have had the opportunity to work with students of all ages and help them on an individual basis.
Kristin

Kristin

Kristin is an elementary teacher with Simcoe District School Board and has been a tutor with Barrie Academy for Mathematics and English for the last 3 years. She completed both her Bachelor of Education and her Bachelor of Arts in English and Music at Laurentian University in Sudbury. Prior to starting her teaching career in Barrie, Kristin spent time teaching in England, and travelling remains one of her passions. Her favourite parts of teaching and tutoring include building a rapport with students and witnessing that “lightbulb moment”!
Nathan

I’ve always loved to help others gain deeper insight in tricky subjects. One of the most satisfying things for me is seeing a student move from a place of confusion and frustration to a place of confidence and independent understanding. I graduated from University of Waterloo with Mathematical Physics, and have been tutoring and developing curriculum since then. I’m interested in many forms of education, particularly for the STEM fields, and believe both kids and adults should always be trying to learn something new. Outside of tutoring I work on data science and machine learning, though you’ll often find me playing (and teaching) board games!
Stacey

Stacey

Stacey is a graduate of McGill University (B.Eng., M.Eng., Chemical Engineering) with experience in academic research in the fields of chemical and biomedical engineering and physics. She has been a tutor at The Academy for over 3 years. Beginning as a tutor and peer assistant in high school and then as a teaching assistant at university, she has over 8 years of 1-on-1 and small group tutoring experience. Though she specializes in math and science, she enjoys working with students in all areas of The Academy’s programs. Stacey has also worked with students to successfully prepare for entry exams and admission into competitive post-secondary programs. If you are around The Academy, don’t be surprised if you hear Stacey talking about the latest Raptors or Blue Jays game – analyzing the sports scores is her favourite way to study statistics!
Valerie

It is my mission to 1) be an outstanding instructor and mentor, 2) instil resilience and adaptability, and 3) create an engaging and enjoyable learning environment for all of my students; whether they are studying math, English or science. I have several years of experience as an educator and mentor. In 2017, I completed my Master of Science (Medical Sciences) at McMaster University. During my time as a graduate student, I worked as an Anatomy & Physiology Teaching Assistant. For the past two and half years, it has been a pleasure to work with the students and amazing team of tutors at the Barrie Academy. It is extremely rewarding to see each student improve with each lesson.
